    AAMI Stadium

    AAMI Stadium is located at West Lakes, a 20 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD.

    AAMI Stadium was known as Football Park from 1971 until 2002 when AAMI Insurance and the SANFL formed a corporate partnership that led to naming rights of the Stadium.

    When was AAMI Stadium built?

    • The formal announcement regarding the site was made on December 20, 1971.
    • On Tuesday October 31, 1972, Sir Mark Oliphant cast the first seeds upon the prepared surface of the playing area.

    What type of grass is grown on the surface?

    • The original turf consisted of 17 varieties of seed.
    • The surface is now a combination of mainly couch and rye grass.

    How much drainage is necessary?

    • The playing surface is protected by 4 kilometres of drainage piping set 61cm below the surface.

    Why does the playing surface appear to be curved?

    • To assist with drainage, there is a fall of 92cm from the centre to the boundary.

    How does the surface get watered?

    • AAMI Stadium and the surrounding 17 hectares of parkland have a computerised watering system. The computer can be set to water AAMI Stadium in as little as 13 minutes (used when the fertiliser is being watered in), or a thorough soaking may take as long as 10 hours.
    • Our own 2 bores supply the water and can each pump 1,000 litres of water per minute. There are 22 full circle sprinklers on the playing area and 20 around the perimeter.

    • AAMI Stadium has 4 light towers. Each stands 55 metres high and has 122 globes installed. The light towers are automatically controlled at 4 different levels.
    • The cost of running level 1, 2 and 3 when turned on is over $400 per hour.
