History of the North Adelaide Football Club
As far back as 1874, the North Adelaide area had a football club, In that year, a club was formed from a number of people who had moved from Victoria to live in South Australia. They called their club the Victoria Football Club and they played their games at the bottom of Montefiore Hill, behind the Adelaide Oval.
In 1883, the Victoria Football Club changed its name to North Adelaide Football Club, but that didn’t last long. The club wore the colours of orange and black.
In 1888, both the Medindie and Adelaide Football Clubs represented the North Adelaide Area.
The Medindie Football Club continued to represent the area from 1889-1892 and wore the red and white colours.
In 1893 the Medindie Football Club become the North Adelaide Football Club we know now.
Prospect Oval became North’s home ground in 1922 and has remained so ever since.
North’s Ken Farmer was the first SA League player to kick 100 goals in a league state (105 goals in 1930). He kicked 100 goals in a season in 11 consecutive seasons (1930 – 1940). Farmer also kicked the most goals in an SANFL match when he kicked a record 23 against West Torrens at Prospect on July 6, 1940. In his 224 match career and seventeen interstate appearances Farmer was never held goalless, scoring ten or more on thirty-seven occasions.
North Adelaide competed in the first match played at Football Park (now known as AAMI Stadium) in round 5, 1974., Their opponent was Central District.
Michael Nunan holds the coaching record for the Roosters, coaching for 12 seasons, 1981 to 1992.
When Michael Redden retired in 1993 he had played the most games for North Adelaide (378 club games and 11 State games). Michael travelled an amazing 231,600 kilometres to and from Orroroo to play for North Adelaide.
North Adelaide’s Number 1 Son, Barrie Robran, played 201 League games for the Roosters and 10 State games. He won 3 Magarey Medal (10968, 1970 and 1973).
Ian McKay holds the Captain’s record for the Roosters, captaining the team for 8 years from 1948 – 1955.
