At a meeting held in the city of Adelaide on February 28, 1878, the Norwood Football Club was formed. It was apparently named after the town of Norwood, south of the River Thames near London, England.
Norwood played their first match at Adelaide oval on May 16, 1878 against South Adelaide.
Norwood’s first home ground was in the east parklands near the tramway and opposite the Kent Town Brewery.
Norwood won a premiership in its first year of existence and then followed with five more in a row.
Norwood and Port Adelaide became famous rivals after a particularly tough qualifying finals match in 1894.
Norwood was the first South Australian club to record a win over a Victorian team, when it defeated Essendon in 1883.
Norwood was the first and so far, the only, club to win the League premiers from 5th position (1984).
John McInnes won three Reserves Magarey Medals while playing for Norwood, (1969, 1971, 1972).
The first Magarey Medal winner was Norwood’s Albert Green, in 1898.
Jack Oatey is the longest serving coach at Norwood, coaching 12 seasons from 1945-1956.
Garry McIntosh has played the most games for Norwood pulling on his boots for a record 371 games, his match career spanning over a 16 year period from 1982-1997.
In 1983 Neveille Roberts kicked the most goals for the Redlegs in a season, kicking 111 goals.
