History of the West Adelaide Football Club

West Adelaide played their first match on May 7 1887, wearing red, white and blue jumpers and caps and navy blue knickerbockers.

West Adelaide have been known as the Bottletops, the Irish Eighteen, the Red and Blacks, the Blood and Tars, The Wolves and currently ‘The Bloods’.

From 1892 to 1894 West Adelaide wore magenta and white and played matches for fun in the parklands. They were not a member of the SA Football Association at the time.

West Adelaide joined the Association in 1897 and wore the now famous black and red colours.

In 1927 West Adelaide used the Wayville Showgrounds as their home ground.

West Adelaide played their first game on Richmond Oval in 1958 against West Torrens.

Jack Oatey, who also coached at Norwood and Sturt, had a brief coaching stint at West Adelaide from 1957-1960.

Neil Kerley is the longest serving coach at West Adelaide, coaching from 1961-1962 and 1981-1984. He coached the Bloods to their last Premiership in 1983.

Dexter Kennedy played his first league game for West Adelaide in 1970 aged just 15 years and 11 months.

Grantley Fielke played in the Premiership side of 1983, won the Magarey Medal in 1985 and went on to play for the Bloods in a record 364 games.
