    2010 Female Football Academy

The 2010 Female Football Academy is well and truly underway and about to have a well deserved Xmas break. This is the second year of our Summer Academy and thirty young ladies commenced at the beginning of November, of these over 20 have never played club football. The Academy has a new home at Alberton Oval and is well supported by the Port Adelaide Football Club and its facilities. Already the girls have enjoyed recovery sessions in their heated pool and ice baths, fitness testing in the new indoor facility and a lecture by the Power Nutritionist. The Academy fitness and conditioning coach, Melissa Ellery, has put the girls through agility and Pilates sessions in addition to their normal warm up routine.

We have been fortunate to have ex–crow stalwart, Darren Jarman and the State Talent Manager, Brendan Phillips (Sticks) take the girls for skill sessions and both the former AFL players were very impressed by the skill level displayed by the girls. It hasn’t all been hard work as the girls enjoyed the day at the beach session and had a lot of giggles during the “Physical Presence” activities.

    Womens Football Display Report

Angaston TeamOn Saturday 17th October 2009 representatives from the South Australian Women’s Football League played a demonstration 9 a side game at Angaston Primary School as a part of the Barossa Disabled Sports Day.

The display was set up to entertain the sports day participants & their families during their lunch break.

The game started with a “ring in” from the crowd who was a representative of the days organising group. She was enticed to play to even up the team numbers.

The first half was well contested with the ball going from one end of the ground to the other very quickly (I should know I was umpiring & almost out of petrol tickets by half time). The skill level was excellent with targets regularly found & contested marks regularly taken. A highlight of the half was the excellent goal kicking from both sides including the local “ring in” who kicked a couple of goals.

At half time the girls (& the umpire) enjoyed a well earned break. The 1st half had encouraged several of the sports day participants, who were watching, to approach the girls & see if they could be involved in the game in the second half. The girls did not hesitate to include these guys & the second half started with each side having 2 extra players.

The girls again turned on a great football display in the 2nd half & always looked to include their new team members. This led to each of them getting a number of touches, kicks, handballs & on occasions, goals. The excitement & enjoyment these guys were having was obvious & I am sure their involvement in the game would have been a highlight of their sports day.

The girls did a fantastic job of promoting not only women’s football but also football in general. The organisers of the sports day were very appreciative of the girl’s efforts & the way they embraced & included their “new” team members.

Well done to all of those involved in organising & playing on the day.

    2009 Grand Final Winners

    GreenacresYear of the Dragon

It was a great day for football, the sun was out and there was a two goal breeze favouring the southern end of the ground. There was a sense of excitement as the players arrived at the ground ready to take on the Eagles in the Grand Final for the third consecutive time. As a team we had prepared well, worked out our match ups to try and stop the undefeated Eagles.

Stop them we did. Our match-ups worked, we pressured the Eagles for four quarters and did not let them get their running game going. Up forward we had options everywhere and our defence was disciplined and strong. Our on-ballers and midfield players ran all day and were relentless with their attack on the ball.

It was a hard fought Grand Final, but there can only be one winner fortunately it was us.

    Greenacres 5.9.39 def Eagles 4.2.26

    Dragons Goal Scorers:
Jess Turner 2 Kelly Spence 2 Rachael Millsteed 1

Tiffany Lee from Greenacres was awarded the trophy for the best player of the grand final

It was our day. Well done Dragons.

    Steve Baxter, Dragons Coach.
