SANFL Umpiring Helps Kickstart APY Lands League
In a landmark venture coordinated by the SANFL to take the game of Australian Football for communities of the APY Lands in South Australia’s far north to the next level, the League’s involvement in providing a more professionally structured competition to the region also extended to the umpiring ranks for the opening round on Saturday, September 1st.
SANFL Umpiring Development Manager, Don Cooper and the department’s Development Officer, Mark Hardham journeyed outback for the historic occasion, with the results proving an overwhelming success for all involved. With the SANFL Far North-West Sports League split into an Eastern and Western competition, Don and Mark had the privilege of not only umpiring the first official games in each sector, but the bonus of mentoring local Anungu umpires throughout the games – an opportunity gratefully accepted by those prepared to take on the duties. “From an umpiring perspective, our presence here is really about helping the local competition gain some structure and self sufficiency going forward.” says Don, whose praise for the local’s acceptance of himself and Mark was most encouraging. “We were made very welcome by all the communities involved and are most encouraged by the efforts our Anunga partners made in officiating the games and taking on board some tips from us.”, continuing, “Importantly, this project is a great opportunity for us to show the locals how the standard of umpiring can help increase the standard of their game – and it’s very heartening to see the respect they have for that and their willingness to improve this area.” “With continued support and education, I’m confident we could make a positive impact to the development of umpires throughout the region and look forward to returning to the Lands in October for the Grand Finals.” For further information in relation to umpiring, please contact Don Cooper at the SANFL on 8424 2268 and for enquires relating to the SANFL Far North-West League, please contact Frank Leonard or Duane Von Senden at the SANFL on 8268 2088.
