2013 Powerade Star Search
The Powerade Star Search Award recognises the talented youngsters making their mark in League ranks.
To be eligible for the award, nominees are required to be aged 21 or under at January 1, 2013 and to have played no more than eight State League games at the start of the 2013 season. AFL rookies are eligible for the award unless promoted to the senior list of their AFL club.
Players who are suspended by the Tribunal in 2013 are ineligible for the award. The 2013 Powerade Star Search Award winner receives a $2000 cash prize.
Round 7
Jake Johansen (Port)
The 16-year-old Johansen continues to show great poise at league level despite measuring in at just 172cm and 62kg. Against West on Friday night, the clever goalsneak registered 16 disposals and six inside 50 entries. He kicked two goals, one of which was an outstanding finish from a tight angle in the pocket.
Round 6
Josh Glenn (Central)
Josh showed off his versatility by playing in all three sectors of the ground against Port Adelaide at Alberton. The 19-year-old finished with 15 disposals while also kicking two goals in the Bulldogs’ first win for season 2013.
Round 5
Trent Dumont (Norwood)
The AIS-AFL Academy member caught the eye while making his league debut on Anzac Day at Coopers Stadium. Dumont, 17, registered 19 disposals, five marks and two tackles while showing great poise playing a role for the Redlegs across half-back.
Round 4
Sam Underwood (Glenelg)
Playing in his first league match, Underwood played an important role as a defender in Glenelg’s come-from-behind win against Central District on Saturday night. Finishing with 14 disposals and four tackles, the 18-year-old is also a member of the SANFL Under-20 squad.
Round 3
James Battersby (Sturt)
The impressive 17-year-old caught the eye while collecting 16 disposals in his league debut against North Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Saturday. A member of the SANFL Under-18 Academy, Battersby (176cm and 78kg) was particularly strong at the stoppages, where he registered six clearances against the Roosters.
Round 2
Brock Castree (Central District)
Playing in just his second game of league football, Castree collected 26 disposals against North Adelaide at Playford Alive Oval on Saturday night. Running through the midfield, Castree also registered eight clearances (four from centre bounces) and six inside 50 entries. Originally from the Golden Grove Football Club, the 18-year-old is the nephew of Bulldogs great Rick Macgowan.
Round 1
Rory Laird (West Adelaide)
Entering his second season on the Crows rookie list, Laird has clearly reaped the benefits of another AFL pre-season. The determined 19-year-old sparked many of the Bloods’ attacking thrusts against Central District on Thursday night. Laird finished with 27 disposals, seven marks and four rebound 50s in West’s victory with the dashing defender particularly prominent during the club’s rampaging 10-goal third quarter. AFL-listed rookies are eligible to win the Powerade Star Search Award. |
