SUMMER GARDEN RELIEF BY JAMIE
Australia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in history. It is the first time that autumn rains have failed seven years in a row in the Murray Darling basin.

This change in climate may be part of a natural cycle or it might be caused by climate change or a bit of each.

Regardless of what the future holds in store, never again will water be able to be used in the way that we have been accustom to in the past.

We all like to have an aesthetically pleasing garden & plants to come home to. It makes the atmosphere around the home cooler & pleasant for everyone. Here are a few tips that may assist your plants & lawns this summer.
  • If you do have a watering system make sure you operate under the present Government water restriction guidelines.Test the system & make sure it is operating efficiently.
  • There are new drip lines available to install in your gardens that are very efficient, even underground systems for lawns! Have a chat with your local irrigation specialist about some improvements to your system.
  • There are many soil penetrates & soil wetters on the market that will assist water to evenly penatrate the root zone of the soil & reduce water run off.
  • Take notice in your local area where proactive gardeners have already given their garden a make over and selected more suitable drought tolerant species, Take note of what plants are doing well! You may be surprised what new varieties are available at good nurseries, the plants do not have to be wire like natives to be water efficient.
  • Gardens must be mulched thick (80mm) with an economical product that will reduce evaporation on a regular basis.
  • Lawns must be Drought tolerant. Preferably Couch Varieties. I would not recommend winter active varieties for home lawns!
  • Look into fitting more rainwater storage if you have the space.
  • Where possible some gardeners are diverting the roof water on to their Gardens via tempory pipe systems, especially during spring rainfall.
  • Mow your lawns a little higher than normal. This will assist the plant during hot conditions & slow the soil drying out so quick.

All the best for the the summer ahead.
