SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker and the inaugural AAMI Stadium curator Doug Butterfield will open the Stadium’s new Grounds Quarters this morning (Tuesday, August 26) at 10.15am.
The $2.25m state-of-the-art building, located at the southern end of the Stadium, is the new purpose-built home for the maintenance staff and their equipment.
In line with the SANFL’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the building boasts:
- a bioremediation system in the wash bay, where oil and pesticides that are washed off equipment will be converted into harmless carbon dioxide and water;
- a rainwater tank to capture stormwater runoff, which will be used for irrigation and grey water use around the site, and;
- a convault tank to ensure the storage of diesel and petrol on site is as environmentally sound as possible.
Doug Butterfield’s presence at today’s opening will emphasise a special family connection with AAMI Stadium – his son, Jamie, is now responsible for maintaining the site as the Stadium’s head groundsman.
Doug retired from the role in 1994 after 20 years in the job. He is now a League Life Member.
