SANFL STATEMENT – LEAGUE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The SANFL received formal responses from its nine League clubs regarding their willingness to participate in a proposed League Club Championships competition in 2011.
Central District, Norwood, Woodville-West Torrens, Glenelg and Sturt Football Clubs have formally indicated they do not wish to be involved in the proposed competition under the current conditions.
West Adelaide, North Adelaide, Port Adelaide Magpies and South Adelaide have indicated they would accept an invitation to participate should the Championships proceed.
The SA Football Commission last week endorsed the concept and extended 2010’s top three clubs a priority invitation to become involved.
SANFL Chief Officer – Football & Corporate Operations Darren Chandler said the responses would now be forwarded to the AFL for consideration.
“As we have said before, the SA Football Commission identified many benefits in this proposed competition and would like to see South Australian football represented should the competition go ahead,” Mr Chandler said.
“The clubs were given the opportunity to decide, based on the proposed conditions, whether they wanted to take part.
“Our clear preference would have been for our top three clubs to represent SA but we respect their decisions.
“We remain confident the four clubs that have welcomed this opportunity would be very competitive should the AFL progress with this model.”
