Key features of the 2009 Match Program include:

• A blockbuster opening round kicking off with traditional rivals Norwood and Port Adelaide Magpies meeting under lights at Coopers Stadium in an Elimination Final rematch on Friday, March 27. A Preliminary Final rematch will follow on Saturday in a new twilight timeslot at the Bay between Glenelg and Sturt while a 50th anniversary clash between Central District and Eagles (commemorating Central’s first match in the SANFL) will take place under lights at Hamra Homes Oval.
• Night games to remain a feature in 2009, with five games scheduled at Coopers Stadium, three at Hamra Homes Oval and two ‘feature Friday night matches’ at Adelaide Oval with Port Adelaide Magpies v Sturt in Round 6 and Sturt hosting Glenelg in Round 12.
• Rivalry Round is scheduled for Round 12 to capitalise on no AFL in Adelaide that weekend and is designed to revisit the history of SANFL by recounting the clashes of years gone by.
• Two other themed rounds will be held in Round 7 and Round 18 (further details to be announced shortly).
• Charity Round is scheduled for Round 21.
• Two matches to be held on the Queen’s Birthday holiday Monday (June 8) in Round 10 with Sturt hosting Central and Glenelg again hosting Port Magpies following the enormous success of the same fixture last season.
• State Game (WA v SA) to be held in Perth on Saturday, May 23.
• Two country matches to be held - Round 3’s South Adelaide v Norwood match at Encounter Bay and Round 14’s West Adelaide v Sturt at Waikerie.
• Eagles to play a home game at Thebarton in Round 20 against South Adelaide.
• The 2009 ‘be active’ Grand Final to be played one week after the AFL Grand Final on Sunday, October 4, at AAMI Stadium.
• A number of League matches will also be preceded by the new U18 competition as curtain raisers throughout the season (final schedule to be advised) in order to showcase SANFL League stars of tomorrow. 

Match start times for day games will all be at 2pm with at least one match to be played each Saturday afternoon to meet the SANFL broadcast commitments to the ABC.
