12 Nov 2009  The Last Whistle
Former AFL and SANFL umpire Derek Woodcock has hung up his whistle for the last time.

Not many field umpires officiate a Grand Final in only their second year, however for Jai Blackley, the call up to the Riverland Football League major between Renmark and Loxton has been a high point in two rollercoaster seasons.

Australian Football has traditionally been a men’s game, with women often consigned to occupying off-field roles. However the SANFL Umpiring Department has, for several years, encouraged the development of female umpires, and at the turn of the decade, significant results have been achieved in the recruitment and retention of female umpires.

Tim Pfeiffer is one of the most senior field umpires on the SANFL roster – with twenty-five years of umpiring experience under his belt, nineteen of which were at state or national level.

Since its inception the annual South Australian AFL Umpire Development Awards Day has been scheduled to coincide with an SANFL League Finals match.
